Washington Heights, Manhattan, NYC has a long history with the piano. In the 1920s, members of the Washington Heights Jewish community formed the Washington Heights Piano Club, an organization that held weekly recitals in members' homes and featured the best young pianists of the time. As the Jewish population increased in the 1930s, the club expanded its activities to include concerts for the community. During World War II, the piano club held charity concerts to raise money for relief efforts. After the war, the club continued to be an important part of the Washington Heights music scene, hosting concerts from jazz and classical greats like Thelonious Monk, Leonard Bernstein, and Artur Rubinstein. Today, the Washington Heights Piano Club is still active, hosting events and recitals for the community.
